                                              Ø  This book is for my chemistry class that contains health notes about chemicals that people use to clean plants from insects and how they affect to the body. Also, the book gives formulas to see how much values of calories are in a food, etc.

·         “Latest guidelines for your child’s diet”, Queens Family (magazine), December 2010 edition
                                            Ø  This article has a little part where the author shows how the environment has changed in the last years and how this affects to the vegetables to grow up.

·         Fast Food Nation by Eric Shlosser
                                             Ø  I will use this book, especially chapter 6 “On the Range”, where they discuss about chicken.

                                              Ø  This web page gives information about organic food that can be similar to the food that people have consumed years ago.

RESPONSE TO FOOD, INC.

 We always get knowledge that is helpful for us by watching or reading something. In this case we viewed a video in class called “Food, Inc.”After I watched this film I think about how the industries have been modified over the years. There are many industries that produce different kinds of food. That is why we currently have more than 47,000 products in American supermarkets. Also, because of this change, the food is becoming more dangerous. In the video they showed and explained how the animals and vegetables used to be grown and fed that is totally different from now. For example, Joel Salatin, a farmer owner who says that his animals have been fed with grass that is natural. He tries to keep the way that people used before, even when he killed and clean the chickens for selling he use the last methods. However, over the years due to the food industry growth, the methods and inspections have been reduced in the last years. That is the case of Barbara Kowalcyk’s who claimed to the government for food safety because her son, Kevin, died from E-coli (bacterium that is commonly found in the lower intestine). E-coli infection is transmitted by food or water that has been contaminated and if the government doesn’t pay attention to the ways of health we can have more people infected.
Another big reality that caught my attention in the film was that many fast food restaurants and industries have been offered to society lower costs of some products. For example, McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy’s and many other fast food restaurants currently have “The dollar menu” that many people prefer because of its cost and quickness. In addition, there are many products in the supermarkets such as soda, chips, canned food, juice with artificial flavors, etc… that have low cost and many people buy these products because of the economic situation.  This can be one of the reason why actually many people suffer from obesity. Nevertheless, there are other stores which are trying to care about food by promoting organic food. This is the case of Walmart supermarket which has a tag in the organic food section, so when people are buying they can see if some products are organic or not.
By looking at this video I learned more about food industries that are a big topic to discuss especially about the changes over the years. Also, we need to be careful about what we are eating and we should think a little bit more about our health.
